Preparations intensify for September launch of ECOWAS Business Council

Preparations are in full swing for the September 2025 launch of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC), the highest decision-making body for the private sector within the regional bloc.

The 21-member council, established by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers through Regulation C/REG.9/6/21, is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering economic growth, boosting investment, and strengthening West Africa’s competitiveness as a preferred destination for business.

The final arrangements were confirmed during the latest meeting of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on Tuesday, 12 August 2025. The meeting marked a significant step towards the council’s inauguration.

Speaking at the opening session, Dr Tony Luka Elumelu, Director of Private Sector, who represented ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Massandjé Touré-Litsé, highlighted the council’s importance in driving private sector participation in regional integration. He urged participants to thoroughly review preparatory documents and provide constructive feedback to ensure a smooth launch.

TWG Chairman, Mr Gerard Amangou, praised the Program Directorate for implementing recommendations from the group’s earlier meeting on 5 August 2025. He emphasised the need to confirm the proposed launch date with ECOWAS management.

Engr. Dr Mansur Ahmed of the Dangote Group stressed the importance of timely action, reaffirming the company’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS and the steering committee in achieving the council’s objectives.

The one-day meeting brought together representatives from the Office of the President, Dangote Group, ECOWAS Permanent Mission to Nigeria, and the TWG. Participants collectively reviewed draft documents and assessed overall readiness for the EBC’s formal inauguration later this year.

Once operational, the ECOWAS Business Council will serve as a central platform for private sector engagement, policy dialogue and the promotion of intra-regional trade and investment across ECOWAS Member States.
