Devastating floods have struck several communities across the Wuli Districts of the Upper River Region following heavy rainfall on Friday afternoon, July 31, 2026, leaving a trail of destruction and at least two people dead.
According to preliminary reports, two individuals tragically lost their lives in Barrow Kunda Village, Baja Kunda Ward, after being swept away by floodwaters triggered by the torrential downpour. Former journalist Nfamara Jawneh, a native of Barrow Kunda, reported the fatalities on his Facebook page, confirming that the disaster has left the community in a state of shock.
The flooding has severely impacted multiple villages, including Jaka Madina, Chamoi Bunda, Chamoi Village, and Barrow Kunda. Homes have been submerged, and livelihoods have been destroyed, leaving many families displaced.
Local sources indicate that the severity of the flooding has been exacerbated by ongoing road construction works in Chamoi Bunda and Barrow Kunda, which have disrupted natural waterways and drainage channels that would normally allow rainwater to flow freely.
Basse Area Council Chairman Mahamadou Ceesay confirmed that the Council is closely monitoring the situation and will conduct a full assessment of the affected communities to determine the extent of the damage and identify urgent humanitarian needs.
Chairman Ceesay expressed sympathy to the affected families, assuring them of the Council’s support during this difficult period.
The reported fatalities have raised urgent concerns about the vulnerability of rural settlements to seasonal flooding. Residents and community leaders have called on national authorities to intervene and provide immediate relief to those affected.

The latest news available indicate that a father identified as Ismaila Trawally and his young daughter were swept away as they attempted to find a safe crossing after the bridge they normally used to cross had been submerged under water. A joint burial for both took place on Saturday, August 1 in Barrow Kunda. An estimated 200 houses have been affected,4 schools, a church and a government office.
The Upper River Region branch officer of the Gambian Red Cross together with members of the Regional Disaster Management Committee went on an assessment visit to the affected communities and reaffirmed its commitment to provide humanitarian support.
