United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Secretary General, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has assured Gambians and partners in the Gambia First Coalition that his word is his bond, stressing that his commitment to political agreements goes beyond signatures on paper.
Speaking on the “For the People by the People show”, Darboe was pressed on what guarantees he could offer to avoid the disputes that have plagued past political alliances. He responded that his integrity should be measured by his character and his refusal to enter into any arrangement he does not intend to honor.
“What I want to say is that I do not agree to anything that I would not abide by. That is me,” Darboe stated.
The veteran politician emphasized that honesty and sincerity are matters of personal principle, not merely contractual obligations. He dismissed suggestions that his presidential ambition might push him into opportunistic deals, insisting that he is not desperate to lead the country.
“I’m not really desperate to be president of The Gambia. Otherwise, I could have accepted all these things,” he said.
Darboe explained that his approach is to make his positions clear from the outset rather than risk reneging on commitments later. His remarks come at a time when coalition politics remain central to The Gambia’s democratic process, with many citizens wary of alliances that collapse under the weight of mistrust.
