Christian Community in The Gambia Celebrates Assumption Day

The Christian community across The Gambia came together on Saturday to mark the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the most significant celebrations in the Catholic calendar.

Churches throughout the country held solemn Masses, with worshippers gathering in large numbers to honor the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up body and soul into heaven. The day was filled with hymns, prayers, and thanksgiving, reflecting deep devotion and unity among the faithful.

Beyond the liturgical celebrations, many parishes organised community events, including processions, youth activities, and fellowship meals. The Assumption feast, falling on a weekend this year, allowed families to participate more fully, strengthening bonds within the Christian community.

Leaders of the Church emphasised the importance of the Assumption as a symbol of hope and renewal, encouraging believers to live lives of faith and service. The celebration also highlighted the rich diversity of The Gambia, where Christians and Muslims coexist peacefully, sharing mutual respect and cultural traditions.

The Assumption of Mary, observed annually on August 15, continues to be a cornerstone of Christian spirituality worldwide, and in The Gambia, it remains a cherished occasion of prayer, joy, and togetherness
