The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that nominations for candidates seeking to contest The Gambia’s December 5, 2026 presidential election will take place between November 3 and November 14.
IEC Chairman Joseph Colley revealed the timeline during the commission’s monthly stakeholder’s forum, noting that nomination forms will be made available to aspiring candidates beginning September 21.
Colley also provided an update on the voter register, explaining that revising courts are continuing to hear objections arising from the registration process. He expressed confidence that the courts would complete their work within the 60-day period prescribed by law, enabling the commission to finalize the voter list.
“Pursuant to the constitutionally enshrined principle of separation of powers, the courts are independent, and as such the commission shall not interfere with their deliberations,” Colley emphasized.
In preparation for the polls, the IEC has launched a series of training programs aimed at strengthening electoral integrity and inclusivity. The first session focused on the legal framework, while a second addressed the role of election stakeholders. A third training, scheduled for September 21–26, will cover electoral operations and results management.
Participants include representatives of the Inter-Party Committee, civil society organizations, the media, the Gambia Police Force, and the Gambia Federation of the Disabled. Colley said the commission intends to broaden participation in future sessions to ensure stakeholders gain a deeper understanding of the electoral process.
The IEC’s goal, he stressed, is to guarantee that the December election and future polls are conducted peacefully, transparently, and inclusively.
