Edrissa M.O. Faal has officially been sworn in as The Gambia’s new Chief Justice, succeeding Justice Hassan B. Jallow, who retired after nine years of distinguished service.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the State House, where President Adama Barrow administered the oaths of office, allegiance, and secrecy. Justice Faal, a seasoned legal practitioner with more than four decades of experience in the United States, including work involving the U.S. Supreme Court, expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to safeguard the independence and integrity of the judiciary.
In his remarks, Chief Justice Faal acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, noting Justice Jallow’s role in strengthening judicial independence during his tenure. He assured Gambians of his commitment to building on that legacy and ensuring that the judiciary remains impartial and credible.
President Barrow described Justice Faal as a highly experienced legal mind and emphasized the importance of integrity in the administration of justice. He paid tribute to Justice Jallow’s nine-year tenure, highlighting his efforts in reforming and modernizing the judiciary.
The President urged the new Chief Justice to continue advancing reforms that make justice accessible, impartial, and timely for all Gambians.
Justice Faal’s appointment marks a new chapter for The Gambia’s judiciary, with expectations that his international experience and dedication will further strengthen the rule of law in the country.
