United Democratic Party (UDP) leader H.E. Ousainu Darboe delivered a fiery address on Saturday, sharply criticizing President Adama Barrow’s administration for failing Gambian farmers and breaking key campaign promises.
The rally, which drew thousands from across the Lower River Region, marked a significant moment in the UDP’s push toward the 2026 presidential election.
Darboe accused the government of neglecting the agricultural sector, stressing that farmers continue to face stagnant incomes despite rising inflation. He condemned what he described as “token financial support” from the state, insisting that such measures do little to address systemic challenges in farming communities.
“Our farmers deserve fair prices and real investment, not empty promises,” Darboe declared to thunderous applause.
The veteran politician also announced that the UDP will contest the upcoming election independently, withdrawing from coalition talks.
He emphasised that the party’s strength lies in its grassroots support, particularly in rural Gambia, where agriculture remains the backbone of the economy.
The Kiang Jifarong rally was one of the largest UDP gatherings in recent months, with supporters waving party flags and chanting slogans in solidarity. Analysts note that Darboe’s focus on agriculture is a strategic appeal to rural voters, who represent a decisive bloc in Gambian politics.
