The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, joined stakeholders in a day-long interface organised by the Gambia Press Union (GPU) to discuss the safety of journalists before and during elections. The event, supported by IFEX—a global network promoting freedom of expression brought together members of the security services and other relevant actors.
Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Ousman Gomez, the Director of Press and Public Relations, Colonel Lamin K. Sanyang, delivered the keynote address. He commended the GPU for its foresight in convening such a timely engagement as the country prepares for the December 2026 Presidential Elections.
Colonel Sanyang underscored the importance of awareness on safety and security issues, noting that “an informed citizenry is usually a step away and ahead of insecurity, crisis and ultimately conflict situations.”
He highlighted reforms within the Armed Forces aimed at building a transparent, accountable, and effective institution responsive to the needs of Gambians and aligned with international standards.
Reflecting on past experiences, he recalled Operation DALLAL KHELL during the 2021 Presidential Elections, where GAF secured borders, protected critical national infrastructure, reinforced security at strategic institutions, and supported the police in maintaining law and order.
He assured participants of GAF’s continued commitment to collaborate with other security services to ensure a safe and peaceful electoral process.
The interface provided a platform for dialogue between journalists and security forces, reinforcing the shared responsibility of safeguarding democracy and ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.
