The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has been given a 10-day deadline by Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) to restore reliable electricity and water services across the country.
The ultimatum, delivered Friday in a petition to NAWEC Managing Director Galo Saidy and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, follows mounting public protests over persistent blackouts and water shortages.
GALA’s petition cited recurring outages, water supply interruptions, and voltage fluctuations affecting households, businesses, schools, health facilities, and public institutions nationwide. The group argued that despite years of investment and donor-funded projects in the energy sector, service delivery remains unreliable.
“These challenges point to concerns over planning, management, accountability, and operational efficiency within the utility sector,” the petition stated.
The organization stressed that electricity and clean water must be treated as essential public services and called for immediate, concrete measures. It warned that failure to achieve meaningful progress within the 10-day period would prompt lawful and constitutional action to hold authorities accountable.
The ultimatum comes amid growing frustration among residents, who say the disruptions are undermining daily life and economic activity. Attention now turns to NAWEC’s response and whether improvements in electricity and water supply will be seen before the deadline expires.
