The National Council for Civic Education (NCCE), with support from the EU–UNDP GREAT Initiative, has rolled out a week-long Civic Engagement Programme in collaboration with educational institutions and civic clubs.
The initiative, themed “Empowering Youth for Civic Responsibility and Peer-Led Learning”, seeks to strengthen civic responsibility, promote peer-to-peer learning, and reinforce electoral integrity among young people as The Gambia prepares for the 2026 presidential election.
The programme brings together students and youth-led networks to explore critical topics such as democratic participation, the role of civic clubs, and the importance of youth-driven civic networks in shaping the nation’s democratic future.
Speaking at the launch, NCCE Programme Manager Ansumana Ceesay emphasised the transformative role of young people in Gambian society.
“Young people are not only the future leaders of this country; they are today’s change makers. By empowering them with civic knowledge, leadership skills and a strong sense of responsibility, we are building a generation that will champion peace, democracy and informed participation,” he said.
Ceesay added that peer-led learning and civic engagement would enable youth to become “powerful ambassadors of positive change within their schools, communities, and across The Gambia”.
The initiative underscores the belief that investing in young people today will nurture a generation of informed, responsible and active citizens who can contribute to a peaceful and democratic future for the nation.
