President Adama Barrow on Tuesday received the newly appointed President of the ECOWAS Commission, General Birame Diop, and his delegation at State House in Banjul.
General Diop visited President Barrow following his participation in the inaugural annual conference of the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority held in The Gambia.
According to the Presidency, the meeting focused on challenges facing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and key areas of regional cooperation, including security and stability, trade, energy, good governance and sustainable development.
President Barrow congratulated General Diop on his appointment and assured him of the Gambian government’s support as he takes up his responsibilities at the ECOWAS Commission.
The president also urged General Diop to promote diplomacy and effective communication in his engagement with ECOWAS heads of state, particularly in efforts to uphold democracy within the regional bloc.
General Diop thanked President Barrow for his remarks and expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation during their visit to The Gambia.
He also pledged to build on the work of his predecessor, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.
President Barrow further reflected on The Gambia’s recent role in the regional bloc, noting that the country held the ECOWAS chairmanship before handing it over to Senegal.
“It is historic that The Gambia held the Presidency of ECOWAS and handed it over to Senegal in the fiftieth year of ECOWAS’ existence,” President Barrow said.
He said ECOWAS should continue to uphold democratic principles and advance regional integration, while acknowledging the bloc’s support to The Gambia.
