The Gambia’s Sports Minister, Bakary Y. Badjie, has announced that wrestling and musical events will no longer be permitted at the Independence Stadium. The decision, he explained, is aimed at safeguarding the facility following its recent rehabilitation and ensuring it continues to meet international standards for hosting football matches.
Minister Badjie made the announcement during the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services’ monthly press briefing held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center. The briefing serves as a platform for government ministers to update the public on developments within their sectors and respond to questions from journalists.
During the session, Minister Badjie emphasized that restricting non-football activities at the stadium was necessary to prevent damage to the infrastructure. “We want to protect the stadium and maintain its quality so that it remains fit for international football,” he said.
The restriction means the stadium will no longer host wrestling competitions or musical concerts, both of which have been popular events at the venue in the past. The move is expected to spark debate among fans and organizers, particularly given wrestling’s cultural significance in Gambian society.
On football matters, Minister Badjie revealed that President Adama Barrow has pledged to attend The Gambia’s upcoming match against Somalia at the Independence Stadium. His presence is expected to underscore the importance of the fixture and highlight the government’s commitment to supporting national sports.
