Hon. Suwaibou Touray, National Assembly Member for Wuli East and Secretary General of the People’s Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), has delivered a scathing critique of the ruling National People’s Party’s (NPP) economic management, warning that the country faces worsening hardship if current policies remain unchanged.
Speaking in an interview with QTV, Hon. Touray said Gambians particularly farmers are witnessing a steady erosion of their earning power.
He highlighted the plight of the groundnut sector, once the backbone of the rural economy, which he described as being in distress. “Many farmers are entering a new planting season with last year’s harvest still unsold and no assurance of a market ahead,” he noted.
Touray also pointed to stagnation across other key sectors. Tourism, he said, has yet to recover from the near-collapse it suffered in 2019, while foreign direct investment continues to decline.
On public debt, the PDOIS leader warned that government borrowing has reached unsustainable levels. He cited the International Monetary Fund’s assessment that The Gambia can no longer access loans without a grant component attached.
According to him, both loans and grants budgeted by the government have consistently fallen short of projections, further straining the economy.
As the NPP’s term draws to a close, Touray’s remarks underscore mounting concerns about the country’s economic trajectory and the challenges facing ordinary Gambians
