Visually impaired Musa Banja launches book titled ‘From Rivalry to Redemption’

Musa Banja, a visually impaired Gambian author, launched at the weekend a book titled “From Rivalry to Redemption” at the Gambia college hall filled with writers, educators, politicians and advocates.

The 24-year-old, who has lived with keratoconus since age 3 and now has about 20% vision, authored the 250-page debut novel to describe characters who turn bitter rivalry into mutual redemption,  inspired by his own life.

How he wrote it

No laptop. He composed the entire manuscript on a basic mobile phone, using Braille, a tape recorder and a magnifier to study.

Background

From Boraba Village, CRR, Musa failed WASSCE in 2021, re-sat in Kaur and passed with 6+ credits. Now he is a final-year student at Gambia College and Information Minister of the Students’ Union.

His motto from the book: “Your struggle doesn’t define your destination.”

In his review of the book, Dr Abubacarr Jallow, Director of Operations at UEG, described the publication as timely and relevant, noting that it has tackled important aspects and personal issues affecting individuals notably people with disabilities.

The father of the day, Hon. Ousainou Darboe, in his speech, said the book addressed issues affecting the political scene in the country. He told the audience that politicians are rivals but not enemies and advised the young people of the country to take responsibility to make the country great.

Hon. Darboe commended the author for the bold approach in addressing themes around personal growth.

Declaring the book officially launched, Professor Mballow of the University of The Gambia praised Musa Banja’s effort and vision, urging greater support for the differently able people in the communities.

Speaking on the Theme of Disability isn’t Inability, Hagie Drammeh, founder of the Hagie Gai Drammeh Foundation for The Physically Challenged, said this achievement is not just about writing a book. It’s about breaking barriers. He told the gathering that this sends a clear message to the world that no condition can silence a determined spirit.

Drammeh commended Musa Banja for giving the world the chance once again to know that disability is not inability.

Family members and supporters of the author also expressed pride in his achievement, describing the launch as a significant milestone.

Speaking at the event, the author Musa Banja emphasised the core message behind his book, stressing the importance of individuals confronting personal challenges and taking full responsibility for their lives.
