Talib Ahmed Bensouda, leader of the UNITE party has dismissed allegations made by Essa Mbaye Faal against the United Party (UNITE) and the Coalition Mediation Committee (CMC), following Faal’s sudden withdrawal from the ADD-led Coalition 2026 flagbearer race.
Faal announced his withdrawal shortly before the flagbearer selection process, claiming concerns over transparency. Responding, Bensouda described the accusations as “false allegations” and criticized the timing of Faal’s exit.
“We will not accept false allegations from Essa Faal. To come out at the voting spot on the day of the voting and unceremoniously withdraw from the coalition, and you are now making false allegations against UNITE and CMC is unacceptable,” Bensouda said.
The UNITE leader further alleged that Faal had earlier sought to be named coalition vice president, a proposal that was rejected. According to Bensouda, Faal then issued a press statement announcing his withdrawal.
While acknowledging Faal’s democratic right to step aside, Bensouda stressed that fabricating claims against UNITE was intolerable. He added that the coalition would have preferred Faal’s continued participation, noting: “Our doors remain open for him anytime.”
Bensouda defended the coalition’s flagbearer selection process, insisting it was conducted with fairness and transparency. He rejected suggestions of bias, describing the coalition as “formidable” and capable of mounting a strong challenge in the December 2026 presidential election.
Following Faal’s withdrawal, the contest narrowed to two candidates, with Bensouda ultimately emerging as the coalition’s flagbearer. He urged coalition partners and supporters to intensify mobilisation, calling for groundwork and grassroots campaigning across the country.
