President Adama Barrow has announced that the Government’s ambitious 255-kilometre road projects in the North Bank Region will transform communities by improving connectivity, boosting agriculture, and expanding trade and economic opportunities.
Speaking on Saturday at the North Bank Region General Meeting in Kuntaya, President Barrow revealed that foundation stones have been laid for road projects covering Barra, Bakalarr, Jurunku, Kerr Samba Kalla, and Kerr Cherno Omar. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to help farmers transport their produce more efficiently, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve household incomes
“The Gambian communities should not be disconnected,” President Barrow declared, stressing that no village should remain isolated or face difficulties accessing schools, health facilities, and markets.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the North Bank, which he described as a major agricultural hub and gateway to neighboring countries, Barrow said improved roads would facilitate trade, create jobs, and expand opportunities for young people. He tied the projects to his Government’s YIRIWAA National Plan, reiterating that “wherever roads go, development follows.”
The President urged communities to cooperate with contractors during construction and safeguard the projects against vandalism and misuse. He also called on citizens to contribute to national development by paying taxes, protecting public property, and maintaining peace.
While acknowledging progress made so far, Barrow assured residents that the Government would continue working to improve the North Bank Region. “The best days of this region are yet to come,” he said.
Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, Managing Director, National Roads Authority (NRA), also underscored the importance of the Connect Gambia Infrastructure Initiative, noting that the projects will help ease transportation challenges and strengthen connectivity between communities across the North Bank Region and beyond.
He assured the gathering of the NRA’s commitment to delivering durable and quality road infrastructure that meets the needs of communities and supports economic development across the region.
The 360.18km project comprises 74 roads across seven lots, marking a major investment in the region’s road infrastructure and socio-economic development.
The projects represent a major investment in improving road connectivity, accessibility and mobility across the North Bank Region.
