The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Gambia Armed Forces, Major General Ousman Gomez, has paid a courtesy call on Her Excellency Dr. Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Kingdom. He was accompanied by his Military Assistant, Major Ebrima Ceesay.
During the meeting, Major General Gomez reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ tradition of visiting Gambian diplomatic missions during official travel abroad. He described the practice as a reflection of the military’s commitment to strengthening ties with the nation’s representatives overseas.
The CDS also praised Dr. Bensouda’s distinguished service to The Gambia and the international community, highlighting her leadership roles in the Judiciary, Department of Public Prosecutions, and as Solicitor General and Attorney General.
He commended her tenure as Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing her as “a proud daughter of the nation.”
Major General Gomez explained that his delegation is in the United Kingdom at the invitation of the British Armed Forces to attend the 253rd Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The visit underscores the enduring military and security partnership between The Gambia and the United Kingdom, which continues to provide training, advisory support, and joint engagements for Gambian forces.
In her remarks, Dr. Fatou Bensouda warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed confidence in Major General Gomez’s leadership. She conveyed her greetings to His Excellency President Adama Barrow, Commander-in-Chief of the Gambia Armed Forces, and extended her appreciation to all serving men and women.
She also commended the CDS and his assistant for their excellent coordination with the High Commission ahead of the visit, reaffirming the Mission’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces in collaboration with the British High Commission in Banjul.
Her Excellency will accompany the CDS to the Sovereign’s Parade, where Gambian Officer Cadet Omar Touray will participate. Major General Gomez is also expected to hold further official engagements and meet members of the Gambian community in the United Kingdom.
