CAF Grants Provisional Approval to Independence Stadium

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted provisional approval for the Independence Stadium to host CAF-sanctioned football matches.

This milestone marks a major achievement in the government’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and upgrade the country’s premier sporting facility to meet international standards.

In a statement, the Ministry expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders who played a role in the remodeling and readiness of the stadium, including the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, the Gambia Football Federation, technical teams, and contractors. The Ministry also extended appreciation to the Gambian public for their patience and support throughout the rehabilitation process.

“The Ministry remains committed to working closely with CAF and the Gambia Football Federation to ensure that pre-match and match-day operations are handled efficiently, in line with CAF’s requisite standards, in order to secure full approval,” the statement read.

The provisional approval paves the way for Gambian football to return to its home ground, a development that is expected to boost national pride and reinvigorate the country’s sporting culture.
