In recent remarks, Lord Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe urged Gambian women to resist the lure of tribal, insulting, and transactional politics. Her words could not have come at a more critical time. Our nation’s political discourse is increasingly being dragged away from meaningful policies and programs, and instead reduced to divisive rhetoric that threatens the very fabric of our democracy.
“As a Gambian deeply concerned for the future of my motherland, I am both worried and ashamed of those who tread this destructive path. Politics should be about ideas, development, and progress not about sowing division among our people”.
“Women, historically the backbone of peace and community cohesion, have a unique role to play in restoring dignity to our political culture. Their leadership is needed now more than ever to stand firm against tribalism and to champion unity”.
Mayor Lowe was unequivocal in her condemnation: “I condemn in totality the indecent statements made by senior NPP politicians at Farafenni. Such remarks degrade our democracy and betray the trust of the people. I am proud that Gambian women did not partake in this shameful conduct.”
She went further, calling out Hon. Hamat N.K. Bah, an experienced politician who should have known better: “Shame on those who chose insults over ideas. Our nation deserves leaders who elevate the conversation, not those who drag it into the mud.”
Her message is clear: The Gambia must rise above tribal politics. Our unity is our strength, and our democracy will only thrive when respect, ideas, and integrity guide our political discourse.
“The time has come for Gambians men and women alike to reject the politics of insult and division. We must demand better from our leaders, and we must hold them accountable to the higher ideals of democracy. Only then can we build a nation worthy of the sacrifices of our past and the hopes of our future”.
